FAQs About Boiler Installations
Everything you need to know about your boiler install
Thinking about a new boiler or replacing an old one? Here are the answers to the questions we get asked most.
How long does a boiler installation take?
Most straightforward like for like boiler swaps take one working day, start to finish. If you're switching boiler types (say, moving from a conventional system to a combi) or the pipework needs rerouting, it can take two to three days. Our engineers will always give you a realistic timeframe before work begins, so there are no surprises.
Do I need a new boiler, or can mine be repaired?
This depends on a few factors:
- Age of the boiler – anything over 10 to 15 years old is often cheaper to replace than repair long term
- Frequency of breakdowns – if you're calling out an engineer more than once a year, replacement usually makes more financial sense
- Efficiency rating – older boilers can be far less efficient than modern condensing models, costing you more on energy bills
- Availability of parts – some older models use discontinued parts, making repairs difficult or expensive
If you're unsure, we're happy to assess your current system and give honest advice, not just a sales pitch.
What size boiler do I need?
Boiler size depends on your household's hot water demand, not just the size of your home. We take into account:
- Number of bathrooms and how many are used at once
- Number of bedrooms and occupants
- Existing radiators and heating requirements
Getting this wrong in either direction leads to poor performance or wasted money, so it's always worth having a proper survey rather than guessing.
Combi, system, or conventional? What's the difference?
- Combi boilers heat water directly from the mains, with no need for a tank or cylinder. Great for smaller homes with limited space.
- System boilers work with a cylinder to store hot water, but don't need a loft tank. A good middle ground for homes with higher hot water demand.
- Conventional (regular) boilers use both a cylinder and a loft tank, and are common in older properties with traditional heating systems.
We'll talk you through which setup suits your home during your survey.
Will I need any extra work done alongside the install?
Sometimes, yes. Common additional work includes:
- Upgrading pipework to meet current building regulations
- Fitting a new flue if the current one doesn't meet the required standard
- Adding a filter or magnetic system filter to protect the new boiler
- Power flushing the system to remove sludge and debris from old pipework
We'll flag any of this during your quote, so it's never a surprise on install day.
Is a Gas Safe registered engineer required?
Yes, by law. Any work on a gas boiler must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. All our engineers are fully qualified and registered, and we'll always provide our Gas Safe ID on request. It's worth checking this for any engineer you use, since unregistered gas work is illegal and can be dangerous.
How much does a boiler installation cost?
Costs vary depending on:
- The type and brand of boiler
- Whether it's a like for like swap or a full system change
- Any additional work needed (pipework, flue, filters, etc.)
- The complexity of access to your current boiler
We provide a clear, fixed price quote after a home survey, so you know exactly what you're paying for before any work starts.
Do I need to be home during the installation?
Yes, someone over 18 needs to be present for the full installation, so our engineers can access the property and talk you through the system once it's fitted.
Is there a warranty on the new boiler?
Most new boilers come with a manufacturer's warranty ranging from 5 to 12 years, depending on the model and whether it's professionally installed and registered (which we handle for you). We'll also register your boiler with the manufacturer and Gas Safe on your behalf, so your warranty is valid from day one.
